Rules Concerning the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists Award

Established March 28, 2002

1. The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (JSPP) confers the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists Award (JSPP Award) upon JSPP regular members or honorary members who have achieved significant research findings in the field of plant science.

2. To be eligible for an award, research findings must have been published within the past 10 years. Award recipients must have been JSPP members for the past 5 or more years including the year in which the award is to be conferred. However, research findings submitted for award consideration need not be based on research performed in Japan.

3. Candidates may nominate themselves for a JSPP Award or may be nominated at the recommendation of a JSPP councilor. Candidates must submit the designated application and materials to JSPP headquarters by the specified date in August.

4. The JSPP Awards Committee established in accordance with the Rules Concerning the JSPP Awards Committee will nominate an award recipient from among the candidates, and will report its nomination to the JSPP president by the end of October. Only one candidate may be nominated by the Awards Committee each year. In some years, there may not be any nominations for a JSPP Award. A major criterion for award consideration will be determining whether the candidate played a central (or leading) role in the research submitted for award consideration.

5. The president will notify the councilors of the nomination results in writing, and if a candidate has been nominated by the Awards Committee, the councilors will vote on whether to confer the award upon the nominee. Any councilor who is being considered as a nominee for an award is not eligible to vote. The president will announce the award recipient, as determined by the results of this vote, by mid-December. The nominee must receive a majority of votes of the voting councilors in order to be granted the award.

6. The president will present the recipient with an award certificate and commemorative gift at the award ceremony. Award recipients will submit a summary of their research for publication in Plant and Cell Physiology, and if residing in Japan, will be invited to give a special presentation at the JSPP Annual Meeting.

Addendum: These rules will become effective as of the 2003 fiscal year.
