Purposes and Activities
The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists was established in 1959 to promote academic exchange in and contribute to the development of the field of plant physiology. Since then, it has developed into a comprehensive society for "the study of the functions of plants" whose membership includes researchers from such diverse fields as microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and genetics.

Since its inception, the Society has published an international journal entitled Plant and Cell Physiology (PCP). The "impact factor," an objective measure of the journal's rating, has been growing every year. Today it is the top-ranking journal in the field of plant science in Japan, and is among the top-ranking journals in plant physiology and related areas of study in the world. The JSPP Annual Meeting held every spring attracts nearly 1,500 participants. Presentations cover a wide range of topics related to plant science and give members an opportunity to deepen their interactions with one another. Our web site also facilitates regular interaction among our members. The Society strives to promote plant science in Japan through a wide range of activities. In addition to our Annual Meeting, we co-sponsor various international conferences and symposia aimed at academic exchange, and have established several JSPP awards that are presented every year to researchers who have had remarkable achievements in the field of plant physiology or who have published articles worthy of special recognition in PCP.

The Society welcomes individual and institutional members, regardless of nationality. We have four types of members: regular, honorary, institutional, and sustaining. We also offer a half-price regular membership to students. Our members, which today exceed 3,000, are increasing steadily. About one-third of those are international members. All members receive our journal, Plant and Cell Physiology. Information about JSPP activities and more general information about plant science is distributed through e-mail announcements as well as through the Gakkai Tsushin (Newsletter in Japanese, for Japan-resident members) and the JSPP Newsletter (for international members).
